The Society of Friends (or 'Quakers') was formed by George Fox (1624-1691), a shoemaker from Nottingham. In the 1640s Fox travelled throughout England delivering sermons in which he argued that individuals could have direct access to God without the need for churches, priests or other aspects of the established Church. In 1808 Redstone, Salem, and Short Creek quarterly meetings of the Society of Friends, originating within the Baltimore Yearly Meeting, requested a new yearly meeting west of the Allegheny Mountains. The Ohio Yearly Meeting "set off" in 1813 included Ohio, Indiana Territory, and adjacent parts of Pennsylvania and Indiana. In 1820, the Ohio Yearly Meeting established the Indiana Yearly Meeting.
